One day I woke up cold, shivering and starving on the floor. A floor where I'd fallen into unconsciousness once again, from my drug-fuelled exhaustion. I was unemployable, broke, chronically depressed and battling undiagnosed trauma (it's never been diagnosed). In what was, looking back, nervous breakdown number 3. I knew things had to change and that only I could do it. I would listen to the universe, instead of ignoring it.
Without any doctors or support groups, I set out to continue living a mental life - just one with a wee bit more balance. When I set sail on a scuba diving expedition to Antarctica, having adventured across 7 continents, written a bestselling memoir and seen all my dreams come true, it was a special moment. It was one hell of a trip. It taught me that there's no such thing as a bad experience, so long as you learn from it and develop your humanity.
